BCU 1 Star Award

This award will develop skills that have been introduced in the paddlesport start award, or skills that have been learnt from simply messing about in boats.

You paddle both kayak and canoe and develop skills applicable to both craft giving a solid basis from which to develop your skills.

BCU 2 Star Award

From your solid base of experience you have gained on an introductory course; this two day course will see you will progressing quickly in a range of boats to achieve a level of skill and knowledge that will give you the confidence to take paddlesport in which ever direction you wish, be it sea kayaking, surf, canoe or white water.

BCU 3 Star Sea Award Training

As a two star paddler you have a wide range of skills, it is now time to put them into practice. Your three star training will focus on the skills, both theoretical and practical, to take you from a competent paddler to a competent sea kayaker. You will spend the two days in specialist sea kayaks, learning navigation and planning as well boat skills and rescues.

BCU 3 Star Canoe Award Training

As a two star paddler you have a wide range of skills, it is now time to put them into practice. Your three star training will focus on the skills, both theoretical and practical, to take you from a competent paddler to a competent open canoeist. You will spend the two days in white water rigged canoes, learning about trip planning as well boat skills and rescues.

BCU 3 Star White Water Award Training

As a two star paddler you have a wide range of skills, it is now time to put them into practice. Your three star training will focus on the skills, both theoretical and practical, to take you from a competent paddler to a competent white water kayaker. You will spend the two days in white water kayaks, learning about trip planning as well boat skills and rescues.

BCU 3 Star Surf Award Training

As a two star paddler you have a wide range of skills, it is now time to put them into practice. Your three star training will focus on the skills, both theoretical and practical, to take you from a competent paddler to a competent surf kayaker. You will spend the two days in surf kayaks, learning about wave prediction as well boat skills and rescues.

BCU 3 Star Surf Award Assessment

This one day evaluation of your skills against the three star criterion will be focused around developing your existing skills further and give you some new goals to aim for. You will come away with comprehensive feedback and some advice on where to go next.

BCU 3 Star Sea Award Assessment

BCU 3 Star Canoe Award Assessment

BCU 4 Star Sea Kayak Award Training

The BCU 4 star award has changed dramatically: It is now an out and out leadership award. This three day program provides the minimum training requirements for this award. The course will cover the paddling, leadership, rescue and navigation skills necessary to prepare you for your four star leader assessment. The IOW is regarded as the perfect place to train for this award with its wide range of ideal locations.

BCU 4 Star Sea Kayak Award Assessment

Our 4* Sea Assessments are becoming renowned for their friendly and positive atmosphere and that is a reputation we have worked hard to achieve. Your course will be run by active coaches who understand what it is you are putting yourself through. You can expect a great deal of further training along the way and to spend a day working with real students (who have volunteered for the job) talking to them, planning their day, then running it for them.

The BCU 4 star award has changed dramatically: It is now an out and out leadership award. This two day program provides the minimum training requirements for this award. The course will cover the paddling, leadership and rescue skills necessary to prepare you for your four star leader assessment.

BCU 4 Star Canoe Award Assessment

A 2 day course evaluating your performance against the BCU 4 star canoe criterion. This course will be geared towards giving you a positive and enjoyable experience that will give you further training and input to aid you in your development as an effective leader in canoe on up to grade two water.

The BCU 4 star award has changed dramatically: It is now an out and out leadership award. This two day program provides the minimum training requirements for this award. The course will cover the paddling, leadership and rescue skills necessary to prepare you for your four star leader assessment.

BCU 4 Star White Water Award Assessment

A 2 day course evaluating your performance against the BCU 4 star canoe criterion. This course will be geared towards giving you a positive and enjoyable experience that will give you further training and input to aid you in your development as an effective leader in kayak on up to grade two/three water.

BCU 5 Star Sea Award Training

This three day training course is split into four main sections, personal skills, leadership, navigation and planning and incident management in the advanced sea environment. Our course uses the advanced environment of the Island to give you a training course that will enable you to develop your experience and practice skills in a wide range of locations. It will include an overnight camp.

BCU 5 Star Sea Award Assessment

The five star assessment thoroughly tests your ability to lead a group safely on the sea in remote and advanced locations. The assessment includes an overnight camp and various planning exercises.
